Chapter 19

Jinx

“Daddy!” Elijah screams the second he sees me, and I barely have time to bend down before he’s rocketing himself in my arms.

When his little arms squeeze me around the neck, I blame the dust in the air for the burn in my eyes.

“Are you ready for the park?” He nods his head vigorously. “Let me introduce you to my son.”

River squeals in excitement at seeing a boy close to his own age when I pull open the back passenger door. “Friend!”

“River, this is Elijah.”

They chatter, a conversation that’s so all over the place, I can’t keep up as I buckle Elijah into the booster seat I got out of Simone’s car earlier.

When I turn back around, Reagan is standing right there, her face a combination of emotions that I plan to completely unpack later.

“Hey there, sweet girl,” I say to Katie, tickling under her chubby chin until she buries her smiling face in Reagan’s neck. “Hey, baby.”

I want to look at the man standing on her mother’s porch in the eyes as I lower my head to kiss this woman, but he doesn’t deserve the attention. I’ll be able to prove my possession over her soon enough.

Her eyes shine bright when I take a step back.

“Unlock your car so I can get her car seat. Cooper’s is too big for her.”

“You brought all these people,” she says as she digs into the purse on her hip to find her keys. “I wouldn’t be surprised if my mother has a stroke.”

“I’ll introduce you to all of them when we get to the park.” She hands me her keys, making me realize that her car doesn’t have a fob that unlocks it, and I hate that she has to struggle with two kids and use a regular key to unlock it.

I pass Simone who doesn’t even have to be asked to go stand by Reagan as I walk up the driveway. I nod at Mrs. Dunn and that fuckhead Brian before unlocking the car and pulling the infant seat from the back. Manners would have me walking to her mother and introducing myself, but from the way I’ve heard Reagan talk about the woman, it wouldn’t be well received. Since I’m not a man who likes to waste his time, I don’t.

It only takes a minute to get the car seat locked in beside Elijah, and Reagan hands Katie off to me. The little girl beams up at me as I get the straps over her shoulders and everything clicked into place.

I manage to grab the passenger side door handle before Reagan can open it.

“I know you said chivalry is dead, but don’t make me look like a complete asshole in front of your mom.”

She gives me a weak smile as she climbs inside, and although there’s a part of me that tells me not to press my luck, I ignore it and kiss her again.

I cup her face in my hands. “Are you okay?”

“I am now,” she says, but I can’t help but notice that she refuses to look back in the direction of the house.
